Why visit Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and one of the largest and most vibrant cities in South America. Known for its culture, history and nightlife, Buenos Aires is a popular tourist destination for travellers who take long flights to reach this pearl at the end of the world.

Founded almost 500 years ago, Buenos Aires has heritage on every block. One of the main tourist areas is the iconic neighbourhood of San Telmo, known for its colonial houses and bohemian atmosphere. The neighbourhood of La Boca is not far behind, known worldwide for its bright colours and street art-filled pedestrian streets, as well as its greatest religious experience: football. On the other side of the Obelisk and Avenida 9 de Julio (the widest avenue in the world), the Palermo-Recoleta duo is another popular and refined destination, with a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants scattered among its green spaces.

The "Paris of America" is full of museums and exhibition centres in permanent dialogue with the latest international trends. In addition, the shows at the Teatro Colón are an unparalleled experience. All these examples show the great influence of Buenos Aires on Latin American culture, especially in music and dance, with tango being one of its main cultural symbols.

We share with you 81 places to visit distributed in the following categories:

The Queen of La Plata. Our beloved Buenos Aires dazzles its visitors with its urbanism, its captivating culture and the spirit of the porteños.

20 Museums, Galleries and Palaces

With more than 160 museums, Buenos Aires leads the South American ranking. Unlike many major cities around the world, most of the venues on our list are free!

The most emblematic are the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (MNBA) and the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), although other popular museums have collections ranging from colonial art to innovative contemporary exhibitions. Further afield, many public buildings and government offices, such as the Casa Rosada or the National Congress, offer guided tours for the general public.

24 Monuments and Landmarks

It was once said that the magnitude of Buenos Aires was "that of a capital of an empire that never existed". The strong European stamp that the Argentinean capital has leaves tourists from all over the world in awe.

You will notice that all the examples on our list follow an axis around the coast. The history and landscapes of Buenos Aires have been built facing the Rio de la Plata, the widest river in the world. Although the Federal Capital has almost fifty districts, the monuments and sites of interest are concentrated in its 8 historic neighbourhoods, the ones that are more to the east.

8 Churches and Temples

For more than four centuries, different Christian orders and other religious communities have maintained important places of worship in Buenos Aires. The most important is the Catholic complex, with the Metropolitan Cathedral in front of Plaza de Mayo at the forefront.

The convents of Buenos Aires are attractive for their baroque and neo-colonial art. Moreover, with their objects and styles from so many parts of the world, the temples of the city are another testimony of the different immigrations and their mixture of cultures.

24 Squares and Parks

With its impressive growth in the 19th century, the Buenos Aires authorities resolved to create a "green belt" of large squares and parks to provide each neighbourhood with different lungs for relaxation and public events. Although fewer examples of the original project remain today, Buenos Aires still has an enormous amount of green spaces for leisure and sport.

Throughout history, Plaza de Mayo and Plaza del Congreso have been the key sites of Argentina's political and cultural episodes. Meanwhile, parks such as El Rosedal, the Botanical Gardens and Carlos Thays are internationally renowned for their landscaping. If you are interested in nature photography, the best month to visit Buenos Aires is November, when the capital is tinged with purple as the jacaranda trees bloom!

5 Experiences and Activities

If you have some extra time left over after your tours, or if you prefer to get to know Buenos Aires in a more "hands-on" way, we recommend several activities. You can enjoy a tango show, go on an excursion to the outskirts of the capital or watch a football match - the choice is yours!
