Why visit Toledo
Toledo has one of the longest and richest histories in the history of Spain, accumulating titles such as ancient capital, principal diocese and the great imperial city of Emperor Charles I.
Founded in the 3rd century BC by the Celts and inhabited long before that, this city was nurtured by the contributions of Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, and Christians, all of whom have left their mark on Toledo's architecture, cuisine and traditions. Roman Toletum was an obligatory stop for trade and administration on the peninsula, and later, as a centre of Visigothic power, its position as a central and influential Christian centre was validated. Traces of both pasts are still visible in the historic centre and the fertile plain of the Tagus River.
During the Islamic period, Toledo became an important centre of craftsmanship and trade. Toledo's famous damascene work is the world's finest example of an age-old technique that attracts tourists from all over the world, whether for jewellery, blacksmithing or decoration. Then, after the Christian conquest by Castile at the end of the 11th century, Toledo remained an example of cultural and religious coexistence, especially between the three monotheistic religions (Christians, Jews and Muslims).
Toledo was also home to famous artists, such as El Greco, who spent much of his life in the city and whose works can be seen in various museums and galleries in the city. The Catedral Primada de Toledo, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, is one of the finest cathedrals in Europe and the geographical and symbolic heart of the ancient city. We invite you to discover its buildings, culinary recipes and traditions among its famous narrow streets!

The City of Three Cultures. Architecture, crafts and gastronomy tell the story of its incomparable legacy and importance in Spanish history.
7 Museums, Galleries and Palaces
With its vast history, Toledo has museums to suit all tastes. The must-see is the Alcázar of Toledo, which combines its magnificent fortress with gardens and viewpoints, Renaissance courtyards, ancient ruins and even the Army Museum.
Further afield, the options are increasingly varied. If you like art you can go to the Museum of the Holy Cross near the main square or the El Greco Museum. On the other hand, the Museum of the Templars or the Manchego Cheese Museum are excellent alternatives for learning more about the identity of Toledo and the surrounding region.
9 Monuments and Landmarks
Toledo welcomes its visitors in style: if you come from the train station or the car park, you will enter the old city via the Alcántara Bridge over the Tagus River. However, this is not the only access, as all along the perimeter of the old town there are several walls and gates from the city's medieval past.
You should keep your eyes peeled, because every time you walk up the streets of Toledo you can find traces of its Roman, Visigoth, Muslim and Christian past. Combined they make for a diverse and truly unique urban landscape. Don't forget to take a photo of yourself in Toledo's letters near the Azarquiel Bridge!
11 Churches and Temples
The Santa Iglesia Catedral Primada de Toledo is one of the most important churches in Spain. Anyone can see from its dimensions, construction stages and works of art how important this church was and still is for Spanish Christianity. We recommend you take your time to visit it in order to appreciate all its areas and details.
On the other hand, for some years now there has been a combined Toledo Monumental pass, which brings together seven temples of the three monotheistic religions that flourished in medieval times. It is undoubtedly an excellent option for getting to know very different examples of Toledo's past; in addition, the circuit will take you through the different neighbourhoods of the historic centre so that you can get to know the city from one end to the other.
7 Squares and Parks
The two busiest squares every day are the Plaza de Zocodover, at the main entrance and access to the old town, and the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, between the Cathedral and the local government buildings. Then, every neighbourhood in Toledo has wonderful little squares that are the ideal rest stop as you zigzag through the small streets with their ups and downs.
In addition, Toledo's altitude makes it an ideal place for viewpoints. On the way to the citadel you will pass the Mirador del Río Tajo, a vantage point for taking photographs of the best panoramic views. Once at the top, the Santa Ana viewpoint, Recaredo Park and the Ecological Path are ideal places to appreciate the landscape surrounding Toledo and enjoy the nature of Castile-La Mancha.
2 Experiences and Activities
If you have some extra time left over after your tours, or if you prefer to get to know Toledo in a more "hands-on" way, we recommend several activities. You can attend a full day of medieval shows at the incredible Puy du Fou, or perhaps relax in the Arab baths of Medina Mudejar, the choice is yours!
