  • What to do in Milan? Complete guide with interactive maps, history and recommendations for your trip | Viaja con Apina

← All cities Traveling to Milan? 🔍 We show you 27 places to visit on your next visit to Milan. Find your ultimate travel guide here: 📜 History and recommendations for your trip 🗺️ Interactive map with the best points of interest 💡 Complete list of must-see places to explore Milan in numbers 400 BC FOUNDATION 3.2 million POPULATION AREA 182 km² Why visit Milan Milan is the capital of Lombardy , the region that drives Italy's economic growth. Around Milan is the largest metropolitan area in the country, second only to Rome in terms of population. Its strategic location between Italy's two mountain ranges, the Alps and the Apennines , meant that this Celtic settlement was taken to the next level by the Romans . In fact, on two occasions it became the capital of the Empire in its final stage. The Sforza Castle is irrefutable proof of Milan's greatness as a thriving modern city. It is therefore no coincidence that it passed hands between the French, Spanish and Austrians. After Italian unification in the 1860s, the inauguration shortly afterwards of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II was a bid to restore the city's centrality. In the 20th century, Milan was a protagonist of the Fascist era , as it saw the birth of both Mussolini's movement and the resistance against his regime. In the last decades, it was the driving force behind Italy's economic modernisation and its connection with the economic circuits of Europe. Because of its strength , it is no coincidence that much of Italian politics has its roots in Milan. Interactive map of Milan What could be more handy than having a map of Milan in your pocket with all these tourist sites already marked? 🏛️ Museums, Galleries and Palaces 🏰 Monuments and Landmarks ⛪ Churches and Temples 🌳 Squares and Parks 🎡 Experiences and Activities See map See full list We share with you 27 places to visit distributed in the following categories: The economic engine of Italy. Elegant and refined, this international fashion capital dazzles its visitors with its modern and proud personality. Monumentos 6 Museums, Galleries and Palaces During the Renaissance, the reckless Sforza family joined and supplanted the Visconti, who had ruled Milan for almost two centuries. As the new Dukes of Milan, the new family sought to compete with the other Italian cities, both militarily and economically, as well as culturally and scientifically. Their castle is a fantastic complex to discover the history of this dynasty: its architecture and exhibitions are worth a visit! Further afield, the Pinacoteca di Brera is the city's star museum, created by Napoleon himself as the "twin brother" of the Louvre in northern Italy. The other examples on the list also boast interesting collections and temporary exhibitions, which demonstrate the connections that Milan continues to have with other European cultural centres. See map See full list Monumentos 5 Monuments and Landmarks Right next to the cathedral, on Piazza del Duomo, you'll find the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an experience in itself. Even if you're not going to buy anything in its luxurious shops, walking through its corridors will leave you in awe. The historic centre of Milan is relatively small and allows you to visit the main points in the same day. But you can also go further afield thanks to its excellent transport network, and discover other renovated neighbourhoods that are of great historical interest or newly renovated, as the case may be. See map See full list Monumentos 6 Churches and Temples The first star of the tour is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Nazionale - the Duomo. It breaks several records: it is the one that took the longest to build (six centuries and counting!), the fifth largest in all of Christianity and the one with the most statues. However, the most visited is another one: Santa Maria delle Grazie, because it houses Leonardo da Vinci's famous Last Supper. The other churches in Milan are also very valuable. Each one of them, and especially those on our list, is a trace of some important stage in the city's history. See map See full list Monumentos 6 Squares and Parks Milan's green spaces are well distributed. For longer walks, you can choose between Sempione Park behind the Sforza Castle or the Indro Montanelli Garden. If you're looking for something more modern, Piazza Gae Aulenti is busy both day and night. And if you're brave, the Milanese cemetery awaits, which has the same level of luxury and grandeur as the rest of the city. See map See full list Monumentos 4 Experiences and Activities If you have some extra time left over after your tours, or if you prefer to get to know Milan in a more "hands-on" way, we recommend several activities. The Louvre alone would take you about 100 days to see the entire collection of the world's largest museum, and then you'd still have to see the other 130 museums and galleries! Paris' sophisticated museums are part of its reputation as a great city of world culture. In addition, complexes such as the Palace of Versailles and Les Invalides attract visitors looking to learn more about the history of the French Revolution. The sites on this list have become world icons and have contributed to making France the most visited country in the world for more than thirty years. Thanks to Baron Haussmann's reforms in the mid-19th century, the Parisian monuments "dialogue" with each other through the wide avenues that connect them. Although each one tells a particular story, they are all linked by the political changes that France has undergone over the last two centuries: from an absolute monarchy to the current Fifth Republic. See map See full list Monumentos 7 Churches and Temples The churches of Paris tell the story of France's complex relationship with Catholicism throughout its history. We recommend you take a detour to visit them, because you will find one in every part of the city and they are very different from each other. The star is Our Lady of Paris, better known as Notre Dame, the most visited site in the French capital year after year, even after its terrible fire in 2019 - such is the importance of this building that kilometre zero for all French distances is located here! ← All cities Traveling to Santiago de Compostela? 🔍 We show you 33 places to visit on your next visit to Santiago de Compostela. Find your ultimate travel guide here: 📜 History and recommendations for your trip 🗺️ Interactive map with the best points of interest 💡 Complete list of must-see places to explore Santiago de Compostela in numbers 830 AD FOUNDATION 98 thousand POPULATION AREA 220 km² Why visit Santiago de Compostela Santiago de Compostela has undergone an impressive evolution from its role as a sacred pilgrimage site to becoming a modern university city without losing its historic charm. The striking feature of Compostela is undoubtedly its spiritual richness, led by the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year, nearly half a million pilgrims and tourists wander the cobbled streets, often with umbrellas or raincoats due to the weather in the Galician capital. It's impressive to see the faces of those who complete the Camino de Santiago, expressing both joy and exhausted tears upon reaching the Plaza del Obradoiro. Furthermore, another dozen monasteries and churches contribute to the city's history and culture. Santiago de Compostela renews itself each year with young people from around the world choosing to study there. Santiago is a city of art and literature, a legacy embraced by figures like Rosalía de Castro and Isaac Díaz Pardo. In Santiago's squares, you can listen to the Galician bagpipes and the buzz of traditional taverns tempting us with the best of local cuisine. Overall, this city is the ideal destination to recharge and start new chapters. It's no wonder they say, "Santiago, cierra España." Interactive Map of Santiago de Compostela What could be more handy than having a map of Santiago de Compostela in your pocket with all these tourist sites already marked? 🏛️ Museums, Galleries and Palaces 🏰 Monuments and Landmarks ⛪ Churches and Temples 🌳 Squares and Parks 🎡 Experiences and Activities See map See full list We share with you 33 places to visit distributed in the following categories: Santiago de Compostela, spiritual cradle and destination of the Camino de Santiago. Its imposing cathedral and medieval charm attract pilgrims from around the world. Monumentos 4 Museums, Galleries and Palaces Santiago de Compostela doesn't have too many museums or palaces, but it does have two unique cultural treasures: the Museo do Pobo Galego and the Museo de las Peregrinaciones. In the first, you'll be fascinated by the exhibition illustrating the deep roots of Galicia, with rooms explaining customs in a spectacular ethnographic work. Then, the Museo de las Peregrinaciones takes you along the same spiritual paths that pilgrims have traveled for centuries. These two recommendations will enrich your understanding of the rich history of Santiago and Galicia. See map See full list Monumentos 8 Monuments and Landmarks Santiago teaches us that there's much hidden in plain sight. An example is the mysterious "Hidden Pilgrim" in the Cathedral. The most imposing landmark is undoubtedly the Portico of Glory, now covered by the Baroque façade but still accessible with a separate ticket. Leaving the city, at Mount Joy, the Monument to the Walker pays homage to all pilgrims who have ever visited Compostela. See map See full list Monumentos 11 Churches and Temples When you visit Compostela, you can play with contrasting churches that have an impressive facade but a very austere interior with those where the opposite happens. Definitely, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the most important to visit in this category and the entire city. Another noteworthy church is that of San Martín Pinario, as this ancient Benedictine monastery features a mix of architectural styles, from Romanesque to Baroque. If not, on the outskirts, the Church of Santo Domingo de Bonaval has the privilege of housing the Pantheon of Illustrious Galicians. See map See full list Monumentos 7 Squares and Parks The heart of Compostela is the Obradoiro Square, but around the Cathedral, the Azabachería Square or Platerías Square also offer excellent views. The Alameda Park is very peaceful and enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. In Cervantes Square or Fonseca Square, you can enjoy street performances and artisan products, especially on weekends.
