¿Por qué debería ser parte de tu recorrido?

On the Quirinal Hill, the National Gallery of Ancient Art is located in the Palazzo Barberini. While the Vatican or Campidoglio museums often get all the attention, this gallery is a must-see for art lovers visiting Rome.

The Barberini family was one of the great lineages of modern Rome: it was highly influential in Roman and papal politics, crowned by Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644). The Barberini transformed the face of Rome with new buildings and town planning and filled the city with their emblem: the bees.

In other words, the Barberini translated their economic and political clout into a cultural legacy as patrons of the arts. Many of their works can still be found today in numerous European cities.

The palace that houses the gallery was the residence of this family, built by the important baroque artists Maderno, Borromini and Bernini, which is why we must look around so much on this visit to appreciate the rooms and gardens!

The works on display cover five centuries of masterpieces of European art, from Gothic to Rococo. Its most famous paintings are in the Baroque style, of which Rome was a centre of reference.
