Pourquoi devrait-il faire partie de ta tournée?

If you're looking for an authentic and social experience in Amsterdam, you can't miss the Nieuwmarkt Craft Market. Located in the picturesque Nieuwmarkt square, in the heart of Amsterdam between the Red Light District and the Asian district, this market is a true treasure trove full of surprises and artisanal products.

Nieuwmarkt square is an important historical center surrounded by picturesque buildings and cobblestone streets. After visiting the market, you can take a stroll in the surroundings and discover other nearby attractions, such as the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam's oldest church, or the famous De Wallen neighborhood.

With its picturesque cafes, restaurants, and coffee shops, Nieuwmarkt lives up to its name by hosting a daily market on the square. It's hard to miss this square with the iconic Waag building dominating the view. This majestic landmark has stood tall since the 17th century and has served many functions over the years, from the Weigh House to the Jewish Historical Museum.

Nieuwmarkt itself was created in 1614 when the canals surrounding the Waag were filled in, after which the square was quickly put to use as a market. Unfortunately, during World War II, the square was used by the Nazis as a collection point for all the Jews rounded up in the Amsterdam area and held there before being sent to concentration camps.

The organic market we recommend you visit is held every Saturday, where the organic market offers a wide selection of culinary delights. Food stalls offer a variety of local dishes from different provinces of the Netherlands and European food in general. From waffles and jams to cheeses and sausages, here you can enjoy an authentic culinary experience while strolling through the maze of small market stalls.

In addition to the food, the value of this organic market lies in its people. How often can you purchase delicious products, affordably priced, and directly from their own producers? Feel free to chat with them to hear the stories of their food ventures and receive useful cooking tips about their specialty products.

Even if you don't go on a Saturday, the square can be visited any day: it's a place where local artists and craftsmen often showcase and sell their unique creations. From handmade jewelry and ceramics to paintings and sculptures, you'll find a wide variety of pieces that reflect the talent and creativity of local artists. No matter which day you go, it's an enriching experience that allows you to appreciate the value of craftsmanship and the effort behind each creation or food item.
