Why should it be part of your tour?
The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is an artistic jewel located in the heart of Madrid, forming part of the famous Art Triangle along with the Museo del Prado and the Museo Reina Sofía. This relatively young museum, inaugurated in 1992, houses an impressive collection of art spanning from the 13th century to the present day, making it one of the most comprehensive museums for European and North American art.
The museum's history dates back to the passion and dedication of the Thyssen-Bornemisza family, who over several generations amassed an astonishing private art collection. Since the acquisition of the former Palacio de Villahermosa by the Spanish State, "the Thyssen" has grown and enriched itself with new acquisitions and donations, offering visitors an artistic visit of exceptional quality.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza collection is difficult to match for variety and quality. We invite you to give it a try and play bingo in the museum: like an assortment of sweets, this museum has at least one work by the leading exponents of the History of Western Art. Of course... over the course of several decades, the barons (and baronesses!) of the Thyssen-Bornemisza family devoted themselves to completing the repertoire.
A stroll through its rooms is like a journey through the history of art, from Gothic to neo-avant-garde. But, above all, the Thyssen stands out for its collection of the different movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, you can still marvel at masterpieces by Duccio, Van Eyck, Dürer, Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Canaletto.
It also has an excellent curatorship that allows you to appreciate the changes in the visual arts over time and to discover connections between artists and movements. Whether you are an art expert or simply an amateur, this museum will surprise and captivate you with its diverse collection and masterfully laid out rooms.
But there's more. You can't miss the temporary exhibitions presented regularly at the Thyssen, a unique opportunity to discover new perspectives and approaches in the art world with the Thyssen's top-notch partner institutions. And if you like, before or after your visit you can stop by the café in the Thyssen Gardens, where you can relax and enjoy a pleasant moment.
