Why visit Oporto

Porto, with over 2,000 years of history, is a tranquil treasure nestled along the banks of the Douro River. This city, which began as a thriving Phoenician port, has managed to preserve its historic charm while seamlessly embracing modernity. Its significance in Portugal's origins as an independent territory in the 12th century lent the country its name (from Portus Cale).

Influenced by diverse cultures throughout the centuries, Porto witnessed the Roman importance in its early days. This is beautifully evident in the picturesque Ribeira district, with its narrow cobblestone streets and colorful buildings. A must-visit is the iconic Clérigos Tower, an architectural masterpiece offering breathtaking views, or nearby, the Lello Bookstore, which inspired Harry Potter films.

The Age of Discoveries left an indelible mark on Porto, transforming it into a major maritime and economic hub. Rivalries with Lisbon were persistent, and throughout Portugal's modern history, Porto became the starting point for all the country's revolutions. Despite challenges over its history, the city stands majestically, epitomized by the imposing Luis I Bridge.

Porto is also renowned for its melancholic music, fado, which echoes through the cozy taverns of Miragaia. Its gastronomy is equally marvelous, from exquisite cod dishes to the wine cellars where tripeiros hold the secrets of Port wine.
