Why visit Florence
Florence went from being a small rest camp on the banks of the Arno River to spearheading the cultural and scientific revolution we know as the Renaissance.
Today it is the capital and most populous city in the Tuscany region, the birthplace of the modern Italian language. It was even the capital of Italy for a few years during the wars of unification.
In Florence everything is close to everything; and the Piazza del Duomo is the heart that connects all the points you visit. You can visit the Ponte Vecchio, cross it and come back to feel that the Capital of Art welcomes you once again with open arms.
We share with you 35 places to visit distributed in the following categories:
The heart of the Renaissance. Firenze transports you with its small streets full of history and relaxes you with its unique energy. It is a jewel to enjoy with tranquility.
11 Museums, Galleries and Palaces
Few cities are as closely associated with a family as Florence. The powerful Medici dynasty marked it forever. The Uffizi Gallery is undoubtedly one of the best museums in the world: in its corridors you will be able to see the development of the Renaissance as you go through the rooms.
The rest of the proposals are not far behind. You can visit Michelangelo's David in the Accademia Gallery and be dazzled by the rooms of the Pitti Palace. Or perhaps you'd prefer to see the kitchen of Florentine political disputes in the Palazzo Vecchio - even the Duomo itself has its own museum!
4 Monuments and Landmarks
About 2000 years ago, next to the Etruscan settlement of Fiesole, the Romans founded a small colony in the middle of trade routes. They called it Florentia - flowering, prosperous - and they weren't wrong.
We promise that on every corner you'll find a picture-perfect scene - all its public buildings and small shops share a unique charm!
12 Churches and Temples
Santa Maria della Flor, the Duomo as it is known to all, enchants all its visitors. It is one of the most visited churches in the world and 500 years after its construction it is still the largest brick dome.
The other churches on the list are not far behind: you can choose between the tombs of Galileo, Michelangelo and Machiavelli, the Medici mausoleum, the first paintings with perspective and expressiveness, or a miraculous work completed by an angel. Besides, any of them will be on your way to wherever you are going, you just have to dare to go in!
6 Squares and Parks
Florence's squares are full of people and excitement at all hours of the day. The best known are the Duomo and the Signoria, but all the others are ideal for a break for a snack or a gelato.
On the other side of the Arno, the Boboli Gardens make for an impressive walk, but the Michelangelo Belvedere up the hill is the place to be if you want to get a full panoramic view of Florence as the sun sets.
